Doors and Renovations
Doors can be an important part of a home renovation. Upgrading doors provides fast improvements with minimal disruption. Along with the visual benefits of doors for your design plans, the best doors for your home can also improve:
- Weatherproofing – Thicker doors, with weatherproofing features such as built-in draft blockers and high-quality finishes, keep doorways attractive while keeping out the elements.
- Security – An updated or advanced lock system maximizes your security; security glass allows visibility and light in a door, without increasing the risk of a break-in.
- Lighting – Doors with windows, or sidelights, can provide natural light for hallways and small rooms.
- Soundproofing – Solid-core interior doors are popular for noise control.
- Character – Customized doors express individuality and increase a home's value.
Home renovators can install upgrade doors themselves, or work with Hoult’s Doors for a complete installation. Here’s an example of how a renovator worked with Hoult’s for a new front door.
Renovation Example
A home owner came to Hoult's Doors for a door solution. When the owner's rimu cottage was renovated, by a previous owner, its original glass door had been replaced with a second-hand timber door. The replacement door looked handsome from the outside, but it had serious problems. The door was too small for the doorway. Because of the gaps between the door and the frame, the hallway behind the door was cold and drafty. Also, it was difficult to open and close - its lock had been badly installed. Lastly, the hallway had been designed to get its light from a glass door. The solid door, with no windows, made the hallway extremely dark.
The new owner wanted to improve this. The best way to do this was with a new front door, sized precisely to fit the doorway, and a new lock. The goal was to improve the door’s security and weatherproofing, while increasing the amount of light in the hallway, all while choosing an attractive door to enhance the house's character.
The owner measured the existing door. Next was a visit to the Hoult’s Doors showroom to find a door with a window. “Being able to see and feel so many doors helped me choose from all the options. It made a real difference when I was picking out my hardware and the door’s glass from the samples there - what I decided on was different from what I originally had in mind.” Then, Hoult’s Doors came to the owner’s house, to confirm the measurements and see what work was required.
Having the door installed took two visits. First, Hoult’s brought the new door to the house, to fit it precisely to the doorway and to install it. Hoult's also repaired damage to the door frame from the previous poor lock installation. Hoult's and the owner reviewed the installed door and to see if weather proofing, such as a draft blocker, was required. Then, the door was varnished and weatherproofed for the specific conditions.
The owner is very pleased. "Hoult's did it all very quickly. The new door is a perfect match for the cottage, and it works smoothly. It's fixed all the problems - now it's a pleasure, not an annoyance, to open the door when I come home." A few years later, the owner came back to us and said, "I never thought I'd get so many compliments on a door. It's really surprised me. People actually do notice your home's doors."
