Selecting Doors
At Hoult’s Doors, we work with our customers to get them the right doors for their projects. Here are important choices to make when you are selecting doors.
- What is your budget? There are a range of door options to fit most budgets.
- What size doors do you need? To find out, see our instructions below, Measuring for A Door.
- Do you know what type of doors you want? Consider:
- The purpose of the door.
- The style and architecture of the building.
- The location of the doorway.
- The opening direction of the door; inwards, outwards, or to one side, as a slider.
- For exterior doors, is the doorway exposed to wind and weather, or sheltered?
- For interior doors, do you want an affordable hollow-core door or a solid door that will improve soundproofing?
- Do you want windows or leadlighting in your doors?
- For entrance doors, do you want sidelights beside the door?
- What finish do you want for your doors? Stained, painted, polished, powdercoated?
- Will you have to update doorways for the doors that you want? Hoult’s can provide custom-built door frames.
- What hardware does your door need? Handles, hinges, locks?
Measuring for a Door
There are two ways to measure for a door:
- Measure an existing door - Measure the height, width, and thickness of the door that fits in the current doorway.
- Measure a doorway or door frame - Measure the space that will receive the door; its height, width, and thickness. Take this measurement if you are adding a door to a frame that does not have a door, or if the existing door is a poor fit. For a hinged door, deduct 8 mm for clearance.
When you are measuring for a door:
- Use a carpenter's tape measure.
- Take each measurement three times, in millimeters.
Hoult's Doors confirms measurements for all doors, reviewing your property and/or blueprints.
Notes About Doors
- Doors can be trimmed up to 2 cm on each side, to fit a specific doorway. The door will need to be painted or finished after being trimmed.
- If you have purchased a wood door, install it as soon as possible. Store it in a dry, well-ventilated place if you have to wait.
- Do not leave an uninstalled door near damp plaster, wet paint, or very humid areas, such as basements our outdoor sheds. Even a quality door may warp or twist.
- When you move a door around, lift it and carry it. Dragging a door may chip or splinter it, or scratch floors.
- Installing doors requires building experience and skill. Hoult's Doors can install your new doors for you.
